![]() This month has proven to be a very exciting month. With the start of a new medium in the studio, the space has really taken a dynamic turn; the studio is now a place for drawing, painting AND sculpture. Caleb has begun to work with plaster casts, including life-masks, wire armatures and clay. The first sculpture, a portrait of Jim Harrison III. Why sculpture? Well it all started about 15 years ago. While still a student, Caleb took a sculpture course during his undergraduate studies at Maryland Institute College of Art. The instructor quickly recognized Caleb's gift for sculpture and advised Caleb to switch his major from painting to sculpture. At the time, Caleb was deeply involved with painting, so the painting continued. Painting became the major focus of his studies while attending the Institute, but obviously not his only interest. About four years down the road, he was awarded with one of the most prestigious international awards, a Fulbright Grant. The grant enabled him to live and study in Italy for nine months. During this time, he lived in Seravezza, a little town strategically located near Pietrasanta which is know as the center of marble and bronze sculpture. This is where he learned to carve marble and cast bronze. That was over 10 years ago.... this month is the re-introduction of sculpture into his hands.
